Know Your Over-the-Counter (OTC) Pain and Fever Medications

Text Box: What are the main types of OTC pain and fever medications?
There are two main types of over-the-counter (OTC) pain and fever medications that you can buy without a prescription from you physician.
One type is acetaminophen (Tylenol®) and the second type is nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (also called NSAIDS).
The NSAIDS include:
 Aspirin (Bayer® Aspirin, St. Joseph’s®)
Ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®)
Naproxen (Aleve®)

Text Box: How do OTC pain and fever medications work?
These medication do one or any combination of three things:
Antipyretic-reduces fever
Analgesic-reduces pain
Anti-inflammatory –reduces inflammation which can cause swelling, tenderness, fever, and pain

Here are the general recommendations:
Read the package label carefully.
Know the active ingredient.
Know the recommended dose.
Do not exceed the maximum recommended dose.
