What over-the-counter treatment options are available for osteoarthritis?

  • NSAIDs
  • NSAIDs are other OTC products used to treat mild to moderate pain associated with OA.  Unlike APAP, NSAIDs reduce swelling and inflammation that often accompany arthritis pain.
  • There are numerous NSAIDs that are available over the counter.  Some of these include ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin.  Because there are many different NSAIDs, check with your pharmacist for the appropriate doses.
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) irritation and heartburn are common side effects of NSAIDs. Take NSAIDs with food or milk to minimize GI upset.  Some patients may develop stom

ach ulcers or GI bleeding while taking NSAIDs.  Report any unresolved stomach pain or unusual bruising or bleeding to your doctor, as well as unusual weight gain or fluid retention.  As with APAP, avoid or limit the use of alcohol while taking NSAIDs.

  • Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using NSAIDs if you have a kidney disorder, a bleeding or clotting disorder, high

blood pressure, or congestive heart failure (CHF).  NSAIDs should not be used in the third trimester of pregnancy.

If you have any further questions about OA or the OTC treatment options for OA, seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor.  You may also visit www.arthritisfoundation.com for more information.
